Your discussion of cheap guitars that have become collector’s items reminds me of two stories: first, about how after his so-called “rediscovery”, people kept giving Son House old National resophonic guitars. He said that he only played those back in 30’s because they were cheap, and that what he really wanted was an electric guitar like Muddy played. Nationals are now very expensive, of course. Second is Jack White’s decision to play a crummy old fiberglass Airline (the same that J. B. Hutto played) on most of The White Stripes’ tracks. They look really cool, but they were poorly made. Now the replicas that Eastwood makes are actually of much higher quality than the originals! That said, hearing Michael Tarbox play Stewball on an old Airline is one my favourite musical moments of my life so far.
