THE HOW AND THE TAO OF OLD TIME BANJO
The groundbreaking book that has people around the world playing the five-string banjo!
In a book that is redefining how traditional music is taught Patrick Costello shares the basic skills of old time “frailing” banjo and much more. Starting with a simple picking pattern and a handful of chord forms (as the author points out, “if you know three chords you can play thousands of songs!”) the book continues to build on those basic skills covering everything from complex fiddle tunes to working up chord melody arrangements of Dixieland songs and beyond.
Each chapter of The How and the Tao of Old Time Banjo is filled with the authors warm “down-home” sense of humor. Throughout the book readers are encouraged to get out and make music, have adventures and celebrate this wonderful thing called music. Patrick isn’t bashful about relating some of his own misadventures from his days as a beginner to encourage you to go out and and make music with other people.
The How and the Tao of Old Time Banjo is a treasure trove of information and encouragement for anyone who wants to start playing the banjo. Don’t wait. Order your copy today and start making music for and with your friends and family.
A BOOK OF FIVE STRINGS
In this revolutionary follow-up to The How and the Tao of Old Time Banjo Patrick Costello tears down the artificial boundaries imposed on old time banjo over the last twenty years and presents frailing banjo in a manner that gives the reader the know-how to play anything, anywhere with anyone.
This is not a tune book or a study of Appalachian banjo styles. A Book Of Five Strings is a guide to understanding and mastering the techniques that form the core skill set of old time banjo. Music theory, improvisation, rhythm and other topics are covered along with left and right hand exercises to build up your coordination and overall understanding of the fretboard. There is even instruction on how to use old time banjo techniques in bluegrass and blues settings.
A Book Of Five Strings is a must-have for any student or teacher of old time banjo who wants a better understanding of old time banjo and the language of music.

Hi Mate, Sorry to hear that you have been ill and hope your recovery is speedy. This is my first time on your site, my name is Doug Irving from Queensland Australia. Love your U tube lessons and in fact they got me started frailing about 2 years ago. My background is Guitar and vocals and I played professionally over 30 years ago and had not touched an instrument for nearly that long. My wife bought me a new Ovation 12 string and I am back into it both feet. I have an open backed Banjo Made from Australian woods with the most delightfull tone. An 82 year old guy from South Australia mekes them His name is Allan Funk. The Banjo has taken precedence though. and I have been slowly building my stock of numbers to over 20, some include Spanish Lady, Cold frosty morning, Sheebeg Agus Sheemore and Paddy on the Railroad. Could I ask that you post a couple of good, later, Country Blues numbers as I have found them hard to come by? If you ever take a trip Down Under let me know you are comming and I will organise a social night out, My Shout.
Regards
Doug
please get better soon
Any chance of an Outlaws and Scalliwags DVD or CD?
Love your style of teaching. Is there a dvd for the how and tao of the 5 string banjo? I’m not sure about finger placement in hammer ons, there is more than one way and I dont want to practice wrong.
Hi Patrick,
I am enjoying the banjo material that I received from you. I am learning a lot that I did not know and that several other sources of banjo material left out.
I am trying the learn claw hammer banjo at 68 and a lot of times these old hands just will not (or is that can not) do what I want them too. But, I am really enjoying my banjo.
I saw you on u-tube talking about setting up banjos and I got the idea that you have banjos for sale. But I haven’t seen anything but you material on this site. Do you have another site?
